Reading Companion and Language Support

The Reading Companion and Study Guide helps students navigate the play’s unfamiliar expressions and representations of Australian speech.

It includes:

  • A short guide to recurring spellings and pronunciation;

  • Brief introductions to nine reading sections;

  • Two-column glossaries arranged in page order;

  • Contextual explanations of unfamiliar expressions and historical terms;

  • Four study questions per section, progressing from understanding to analysis and interpretation; and

  • Sample answers in a separate teacher version.

Students can keep the glossaries beside the play while reading, then use the questions for comprehension, discussion, revision and evidence collection.

Designed for Purposeful Teaching

Lessons generally include:

  • A learning intention;

  • Three success criteria;

  • A Do Now activity drawing on prior learning;

  • Explicit teaching and worked examples;

  • Regular opportunities for students to respond;

  • Guided and independent analysis;

  • A summary of key learning; and
