'Picnic at Hanging Rock' — Lesson 09: Femininity and Adolescence
This individual lesson is part of the Lesson Ready unit on Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Lesson 09 explores the film’s representation of femininity and adolescence. Students examine how clothing, posture, education, beauty and social observation shape expectations of female identity before considering how different characters conform to, resist or complicate these expectations.
Students analyse adolescence as a period of dependence, developing independence and vulnerability, while evaluating how the scrutiny directed towards female characters influences their experiences.
