'Picnic at Hanging Rock' — Lesson 03: Social and Cultural Values
This individual lesson is part of the Lesson Ready unit on Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Lesson 03 explores the social and cultural values represented in the film. Students examine expectations surrounding femininity, class, education, behaviour and respectability before analysing how particular characters conform to, resist or expose tensions within these values.
The lesson also encourages students to consider how audiences in 1975 and contemporary audiences may interpret the film’s representation of colonial society differently.
