'Orbital' — Lesson 03: Understanding Chie and Roman: Memory, Grief and the Experience of Time
An editable VCE English and EAL lesson exploring the characterisation of Chie and Roman in Samantha Harvey’s Orbital.
Students examine how Chie’s grief and memories of her mother shape her experience aboard the spacecraft. They also analyse Roman’s different experiences of time, including the distance between his life in orbit and the relationships and responsibilities he has left on Earth.
Through close analysis of photographs, memories and temporal shifts, students develop a broader interpretation of how human beings experience connection, loss and time.
