An editable VCE English and EAL lesson exploring Harvey’s representation of Earth in Orbital.

Students analyse passages that present beauty and threat within the same view, track the development of the typhoon and examine signs of environmental damage visible from orbit. They consider how the astronauts’ elevated perspective reveals both Earth’s extraordinary beauty and its vulnerability.

The lesson supports students to develop interpretations of environmental responsibility without reducing the novel’s representation of Earth to a simple warning.

Includes:

  • Editable PowerPoint lesson slideshow
  • Editable student worksheet
  • Detailed sample answers

This resource is Lesson 8 of the complete 14-lesson Orbital unit but can also be purchased and taught independently.

The novel is not included. This is a digital product supplied as a downloadable ZIP file. Available with an Individual Teacher Licence or Faculty Licence — One Campus.
